At a Democratic fundraiser this week, President Barack Obama caused a stir when he referred to California Attorney General Kamala Harris as “by far the best-looking attorney general in the country.” On Friday, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney announced that Obama had called Harris to apologize for those comments.
“He called her to apologize for the distraction created by his comments,” Carney told the White House press corps.
Carney said that Obama “did not want in any way to diminish the attorney general’s professional accomplishments and her capabilities.”
“He fully recognizes the challenges women continue to face in the workplace and that they should not be judged based on appearance,” Carney added.
